In a podcast interview, the famous author and professor Cal Newport while talking about the Deep Work, he mentioned among other things that people should strive to minimize the number of context switches from one task to another, because this way we are able to save a lot of time and attention that can be invested in valuable things.
Minimize context switching to improve the quality of the work that you do
For those of you that did not have the chance to read what
deep work is earlier, it is a label used to describe the work
which requires intense sessions of concentrations. According
to Cal, which I also believe, deep work is something very
valuable that will be the pivotal deterministic factor among
top performers and the others in a non-stop demanding world
for our attention.
Most of us switch from one task to something not important,
which as a result occupies our time and mental energy and
attention which could otherwise be invested in something
valuable and beneficial. However, this is the antidote of our
productivity that we should avoid at any cost.
We should treat our concentration as a very valuable asset for
our professional and personal careers and taking the means of
improving it is something worth considering. While building
something great it is not only by adding new things that can
help; existing things that do not bring any value to the table
should be eliminated ruthlessly, where here we can include
switching contexts.
Deep work is something that is gained through deliberate
efforts and training, and not something that is easily
accessible for anyone.
