We watch a lot of videos online like news, sports, friends’ recordings, tutorials, TED talks, and many others. HTML5 video provides native APIs to accelerate playback of any video, but most implemented players either hide or limit this functionality. Video Speed Controller is a Chrome extension that helps with this issue.
This extension is called Video Speed Controller and can be found in Chrome Web Store. I have used it in the past few weeks, and have really liked it.
YouTube limits you to these predefined speed rates 0.25x, 0.5x, 0.75x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, where using this extension, you can use any rate you find more convenient for you.
These are the shortcuts that you can use after you have installed it:
– S – decrease playback speed.
– D – increase playback speed.
– R – reset playback speed.
– Z – rewind video by 10 seconds.
– X – advance video by 10 seconds.
– V – show/hide controller.
As you can see from the shortcut list, this extension also gives you the ability to also go back and forth in the video.
Not every video that we want to watch is worth watching at the same pace. We watch some of them just for getting an overview of what’s going on, and for some, we want to only watch a certain part quickly, before we learn that information that we are seeking. We may watch other videos from beginning till the end, but we may need to speed up certain parts, and only have a normal, or a slower pace for certain parts of the video.
You can find Video Speed Controller in the Chrome Web Store and I highly recommend you to give it a try.
