Tony Buzan in his book “Use your head” mentions that when a student sits down to study and does not have a clear ending point, he will not be able to properly focus because he will be constantly having the feeling that he will be studying forever. He will be constantly battling with his motivation and find it difficult to learn the material in front of him, because he does not know when the next break will be, or how would the task look when it is done.
This is also important in another cases and can be said for other similar cases as well. When a programmer does not have a clear guideline about the user interface and when that part is finished, he will be actually urged to skip the work and procrastinate by checking his inbox. Or a manager who did not tell when is the ending time of the meeting, would usually find his colleagues tired and not present all the time, because they might start daydreaming.
Moreover, the same event can happen also to workaholics and non-workaholics alike. Workaholics might want to constantly stay busy working with something, because that is what brings them a lot of joy. However, they might not find at least at few moments of twenty-four hours to stay with their family. A similar occurrence is with non-workaholics, who do not know when their job will finish, find themselves working over-time because of a non-finished task that took a very long time to complete, because of the deficiency of concentration and the presence of Facebook notifications.
When you know when you will finish work, or when you know how your tasks looks like when it is finished, more often than not you will find yourselves engaged in the tasks ahead and finish them on time.
