A couple of days ago, a person that I know told me something that surprised me and once again inspired me to believe about the tremendous impact that little acts can have. Only during the year 2015, he has read around 20-30 books despite having a full time job and also having family responsibilities and having to travel about 2 hours each day to go and come back from the workplace.
He did not use any fancy speed-reading technique, but he simply used to carry some hard-copied novels that he liked and instead of wasting time watching from the window of the bus how the traffic gets chaotic while going to work or turning back home, he used to read. That time that is almost equal to two hours is worth spending in something that is more valuable than merely watching from the window and getting stressed out whether you will get late for your work.
This time, of commuting to work and turning back home can often be neglected and wasted. In fact, not only this, but a lot of other parts of our days can be wasted and not used properly. Usually, some small changes are what is needed to give new pathways to our lives. If we could simply identify these precious moments that are only wasted and then try to fill this void of simply daydreaming and instead, invest in learning something new, that would make a tremendous change in our lives. It would not only enrich our vocabulary and help us get better at communicating, but it would also enrich us with new experiences, help us do mental workouts, and also enhance our creativity and productivity.
Kevin Kelly, who is considered as one of the most interesting person in the world, in a recent “Questions and answers” session that he had was asked: What is something (a certain habit/skill/hobby) that you believe can have a life changing impact for most people?
He answered that reading 10 books each year, books that you like to read, can have a tremendous impact in your life. He specifically mentioned books, because usually books represent a more refined version of material that has already been reviewed.
If are too busy that you might think you do not have the time to read 10 books a year, you might want to get some audio books and listen them while you are doing a working out, or a couple of minutes before sleeping, or while you are driving. Only a few minutes a day that you invest in reading a book and absorbing information might give your life a better horizon by giving you new perspectives of viewing things, because of the new experiences that you learn and hear about. Not only that, but by investing in your learning, you will also get more productive and get easier to your goals.
