A lot of us are learned to say that we are not simply meant to do something. We are not meant to become the best at what we do. We are not meant to pursue that dream career that we aspired when we were kids. We cannot leave the legacy that we have been dreaming for a lot years. However it does not matter that it should be like that for the rest of our lives. We can change our mindset and see these as something that we have not accomplished yet, and that there is still some hope, desire and willpower to accomplish them.
This can be also labeled as a progressive mindset, which represents a type of mindset that can be used to see things in motion rather than at a static state. With motion, I mean, things can change and are about to change. This principle can be helpful in overcoming our self-doubts and fears that prevent us to take action. Overcome those inner voices and critiques that we are not able to accomplish our ideal goals. Viewing things up to a point in time simply as things that have been done towards the overall goal can be associated with progressive mindset. Also seeing the inaction and the initial resistance towards that goal as steps that have been simply preparing you to solidify your resolve to take action.
We are used to describe our situations using that static mindset, but it is very important for us to change the types of wordings that we use while describing our goals or our current levels.
Let’s take some examples that can help us illustrate this principle and how it can be used to replace our old patterns of thinking:
I am overweight with I am still not at the desired level of weight.
I am always late with I still need to work at showing up on time.
I do not read any book with I have not been reading any book lately.
I regularly miss going to gym with I still need to work on sticking to my schedule of going to gym.
I am lazy with I need to have a better work discipline.
There are other examples that could be used as well, but these were only to make sure that you understand what I am trying to convey through this post. You can currently be using a lot of derivatives of static mindset that are probably giving you self-sabotaging-types of behaviors which do not bring you near to your goals. The main rule for transforming those static mindsets into progressive ones is to reformulate your description about them. This means that you are updating your point of view in such a form that you are more likely to see that particular goal as something that is within the range of achievement but that needs more dedication and effort from your side.
We should also remember that it is possible for us to have some progressive mindsets but some static ones for different areas of our life. It is important to try to identify the most important ones and then try to turn them into progressive-type of mindset. You can do that by using a pen and a paper or other types of writing that you prefer. This can be an ongoing battle and something that you may want to install for your future goals as well.
Take action now
Rather than seeing this as another food for thought advice and simply leaving from this page, try to take a minute and identify an area where you have a static type of mindset and try to reformulate it in such a way that you still see some hope that you can accomplish the goal which you are after.
