You might have seen how a fly tries to go outside countless times but does not realize that it is being prevented from an invisible obstacle that is in front of it. It sounds like a nice story, but we humans as we tend to consider ourselves superior creatures, usually fall into the same traps. We do not ponder and reflect about the obstacles that are stopping us, but carelessly try to use the same technique to “go outside”.
If you have not been able to achieve what you have always dreamed of having, then probably it is time that you should either modify your goals and dreams, or you should try another approach. Become aware about the existence of the obstacles that are preventing you from achieving what you really want.
- Is procrastination that is preventing you from learning for your exams?
- Is your smartphone distracting and making it hardly possible for you to get your most important priorities of the day done?
- Is TV or social media taking too much time for you?
After you have identified the obstacles, try to calmly treat them and consider how you could deal with them, so that you get advantage of it.
- If procrastination is preventing you from learning, but you start learning just two days before each exam, you might need to try to put your own deadlines so that you get obsessed with the work finished before those deadlines. Treat deadline as a line of death: if you pass it, you will “die”.
- If your smartphone notifications are stopping you from a focused session of work, you might need to turn off your notifications or the Wireless.
- If you are wasting too much time on TV or social media, maybe it would be better for you to turn off the TV, or stop the internet connection while you work. You might need to clean your Facebook News Feed and turn your Facebook into a simple inbox.
Remind yourself that the obstacles might be there and that might not have to do with you. It can be that your obstacles might exist so that you might be tested if you are determined enough to put effort and not quit while pursuing the journey towards your goals. They are not against you, they might be there for you.
