Learning a foreign language can usually be seen as a very difficult task to do, especially if you didn’t learn that language when you were younger. But this doesn’t seem to be true, because according to a research, this belief is false and that age is not a valid excuse for failing to learn a new language. Let’s investigate maybe one of the main reason why children are better in learning a new language compared to old people, which has been as a factor to form that belief about the potential impact of age in learning a new language.
The famous polyglot, Benny Lewis, who could speak only English when he was 21 years old, but then learned a lot of other languages for a short period a time, in the video below tells some of the reasons why people fail to learn a new language, especially adults. He has been travelling to different places, and has met a lot of other polyglots and can be seen as an expert in learning a language, even though he used to be bad in learning them a few years ago. According to Lewis, people usually try to pursue the journey of learning a new language to accomplish a superficial goal like impressing the others and use boring methods and approaches to try to learn new words and phrases. On the other hand, children are more passionate in learning, where they try to incorporate learning a new language in their games and entertainment, thus being more compelled and inspired to both learn and have fun at the same time.
So if you have been trying to learn a new language because you want to go to a place where English is not a common language among the citizens of that place, but were facing with difficulties to attain your goal, try to make the process of learning more entertaining and enjoyable.
